Kaieteur News – As Guyana approaches General and Regional Elections, the Suriname-Guyana Chamber of Commerce (SGCC) strongly encourages all political parties to prioritise the completion of two vital infrastructure initiatives: the Corentyne River Bridge and the modernisation of the CANAWAIMA ferry service.
In a press release, the SGCC emphasises that these strategic projects will significantly boost economic growth in Guyana and Suriname by facilitating faster, more reliable movement of people, goods, and services between two rapidly expanding CARICOM economies.
According to the chamber, in the short term, modernising the CANAWAIMA ferry through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) will provide immediate economic benefits by improving reliability and efficiency. “This upgrade could increase passenger and cargo volumes by at least 30% annually, directly benefiting trade, tourism, and small businesses along the Corentyne corridor. In the longer term, the Corentyne River Bridge, managed jointly via a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) with blended national and international financing, would transform regional connectivity,” the release added.
SGCC estimates that seamless transport via this bridge could boost cross-border trade by over 50%, attract significant manufacturing investment, double tourist visits between Guyana and Suriname within two years of completion, and facilitate faster, easier access to larger South American markets.
“Together, these projects promise substantial gains for both nations, strengthening Guyana’s competitive edge, enhancing Suriname’s market access, and promoting integrated economic development. SGCC remains committed to supporting these critical initiatives, recognising that strong infrastructure is foundational to shared prosperity and regional integration,” the release read.
