‘I had to make a decision; the people made a choice’ – Sarabo-Halley on joining WIN
Kaieteur News – In a surprising move, former Member of Parliament (MP) under the APNU+AFC Tabitha Sarabo-Halley has joined the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Party, headed by businessman Azruddin Mohamed.
Sarabo-Halley appeared with Mohamed Monday afternoon outside the Umana Yana clad in the WIN’s blue shirt ahead of him submitting his list of candidates. She is not the first of her peers to support the United States (U.S.) sanctioned businessman.
She followed former PNCR General Secretary Dawn Hastings-Williams and Natasha Singh-Lewis.
“It is surprising, I understand people saying it’s a surprise, but for me personally I had to make a decision, the people made a choice, the people are choosing something different, the people have decided that what existed for the last 50 years is not working for them but they want to see something different, they want something new and they hoping with that new thing that they would be able to get what they truly deserve as Guyanese citizens,” Sarabo-Halley told Kaieteur News outside of Umana Yana.
The former parliamentarian said that her purpose and role as a servant leader is to ensure that the people get what they deserve and she will support initiatives that will achieve that goal.
Questioned about the difference among WIN and the other parties, Sarabo-Halley said “I am actually very excited about what is going to come and unfolding in the next week. We are getting through this process which was Nomination Day, once we done here, we are going to deal with manifesto and all of those policies. I am going to tell you; you would also be surprised in the coming weeks what we have in store for the Guyanese people.”
Asked to comment on the sanctions imposed on the billionaire businessman by the U.S. government, she said, Guyana is a sovereign country and the people have a right to decide who leads them.
Meanwhile, Randy Williams of Paramakatoi, Region Eight, told Kaieteur News that he joined WIN because, “it’s a different general of politicians than the ones we are accustomed to, so I figure there is a need for change, we are tired of one thing over and over…this is a chance to make a difference in a different way.”
Williams said that should WIN, win one focus area is to work closely with the Indigenous communities. This, he said, is not limited to his village but equal focus would be placed other villages.
Another candidate, Mark DeFrance whose party – A New and United Guyana (ANUG) recently joined WIN, told the media that, “Team WIN is much more than one person… TEAM WIN is a team and we are coming with a people-centred policy that will look at the people. Our interactions with the people have given us all of the issues that the people are facing and we will look at best how to address these issues that the people are facing.”
Without divulging any details, DeFrance sought to assure reporters that WIN has a power-packed manifesto that will be made public soon. He said too that a summarized version will be released within two weeks and the full manifesto will be shared at the launch of their campaign.
WIN through its leader disclosed that it will be contesting in all regions.
According to its National Top Up list, there are 82 candidates and signatures. Among them are teachers, doctors, a physiotherapist, forest officer, businessmen, dentist, pharmacist, accountant clerk, farmer, and managers.
