Kaieteur News – They say health is wealth, and therefore, being in a good shape not only physically but also mentally can do us wonders.
Today, The Waterfalls wishes to share with you, our readers, and the story of a young lady who curated a space to inspire individuals to embrace their wellness. She is 26-year-old Lushon Wilburgh, the proud owner of a small business called ‘The Little Wonders, which started on July 10, 2023.
The Little Wonders is an online wellness business which offers products and services such as self-care boxes/baskets, menstrual pouches, and scripture based bookmarkers just to name a few. It should be noted that she operates this venture along with her younger sister Cassadie Wilburgh.
Before we get into what led Wilburgh to start her wellness business, you should know, she is the holder of a Degree in Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering which she attained from the University of Guyana in 2024.
Briefly, she shared that her journey in the engineering field has been nothing short of exhilarating as it allows her to combine her technical prowess with her love for creativity and innovation. “I am always vigorously pursuing opportunities to be a part of organizations, where I can apply my love for creativity and willingness to give back hence why I volunteer with The Youth Development Guyana Team, yearly. It is always good to be a part of uplifting, educating and nurturing youths. I also function as a Dance instructor at the WIST Ministries Int’l,” she said.
Speaking of uplifting and nurturing others, it is one of the fundamentals that sparked her interest in launching her wellness business.
In an exclusive interview with this magazine, Wilburgh shared that the passion behind her business stemmed from a desire to break the stigma surrounding menstrual health, promote self-care, spiritual growth and foster a sense of community.
“I am excited to provide products that not only meet practical needs but also inspire individuals to embrace their wellness. I felt compelled to create a space where products can assist during these times are accessible and affordable. In addition to menstrual health, I am a Christian and nurturing the mind and spirit are important that’s why I also include bookmarks, books and anything that can assist those in their walk and lot of self-care items to ensure we are in the best physical shape,” she explained.
She highlighted that in terms of preparing her for this business journey, her skills came from her educational background and now career life.
Having celebrated two years of ‘The Little Wonders’ recently, Wilburgh informed this magazine that having a good support system is crucial and being fortunate enough, she has had and continue to have a praying family and supportive friends along the way.
Recalling her early days in business, she related that one of the first challenges, which she encountered was determining the right pricing strategy for her products.
“I wanted to ensure that my products were affordable for my target audience while also covering costs and maintaining quality. To address this, I conducted thorough market research to understand the pricing for similar products. I analyzed competitors’ prices and gathered feedback from potential customers about their willingness to pay. This helped me find a balance between affordability and profitability,” she explained.
The second issue, she said was being patient through the slow seasons.
Not having that rush for orders, she noted had really discouraged her. Getting through this, she sought advice from other business owners in handling those moments. Overcoming the difficult times, Wilburgh said a lot of prayers helped in this regard.
Further, when asked what she intends to achieve in the long term for her business, the young business owner revealed that she is aiming to have a physical location and offer way more services that will meet the needs of customers.
That being said, our featured entrepreneur is of the belief that young entrepreneurs play a transformative role in our society.
She noted that their contributions span over economic, social, and cultural dimensions because of all the different spaces they are able to be in.
“They bring fresh perspectives embrace new technologies openly and are driven by a purpose beyond profit. When we build businesses, they are around social impact, environmental sustainability, and most importantly community development,” she stated.
Further, she noted that in terms of helping small businesses develop, is for there to be more trading and mentorship opportunities and bigger collaborations.
