Kaieteur News – Dawn Hastings-Williams, a former executive of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and opposition member of parliament (MP) has parted ways with the PNCR and has joined the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN).
WIN is a party launched by businessman, Azruddin Mohamed, who was last year sanctioned by the United States Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
In a statement Friday evening, Williams said, “As our country is preparing to take its place on the global stage in this fast-paced, technologically advanced era, it is easy for our national development to be derailed and lose its momentum if those whom we choose to lead this advancement are ill-equipped and lack the substance and veracity that is necessary for this transition.”
She added that over the years, Guyana has been plagued by “ineptitude and deficient” leadership which she believes has left lingering negative effects on national development and the lives of Guyanese.
Hastings-Williams added, “For too long Guyanese have been forced into submission to a system of government which saw citizens being neglected, discriminated against and denied justice. Others are still without basic necessities and in some instances totally ignored.”
She argued that Guyana needs strong, visionary leadership that will ensure the country’s natural resources benefit its people.
“Guyana as we know, is endowed with an abundance of natural resources but yet we seem to be on a slow- moving poverty reduction train. Available data by the World Bank as of 2019 indicate that 48 per cent of our population live in poverty. It is therefore obvious that we need stronger and more vigorous poverty reduction strategies to combat this phenomenon. I found Azruddin Mohamed’s vision truly inspiring after reviewing the manifesto of the We Invest in Nationhood Party which outlines some of these strategies,” she underscored.
She said that WIN led by Mohamed promises the type of government and leadership that will give Guyanese a united voice. She further noted that WIN’s policies promote genuine leadership that is committed to ensuring equality in the distribution of our nation’s wealth. Hastings-Williams said, “It is my conviction that WIN provides a vision which is competitive, strong and fully equipped to lead Guyana into the future.”
