‘Oil money alone enough to fund APNU’s plans for Guyana’ – Mahipaul

Kaieteur News – Officially kicking off the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) coalition’s elections campaign on Sunday, Ganesh Mahipaul, the party’s vice presidential candidate, underscored that the party’s plans for Guyana can be financed by the revenues received from oil.

Though Vice President and General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C), Bharrat Jagdeo, has argued that the revenues Guyana receives from oil are not enough to finance most of the APNU’s promises, Mahipaul begs to differ.

Speaking at the campaign launch held at the Square of the Revolution, Mahipaul outlined plans similar to those that were already introduced by the PPP administration, but expanded on those. He laid out the APNU’s vision for national development under an Aubrey Norton-led government. He said that APNU will increase the children’s grant to $120,000 per school child annually as well as two hot meals per day, support free tertiary education, and direct cash grants for students. He also spoke about expanding the government’s 10-day worker programme by upskilling the workers and getting them enrolled in technical institutions or the University of Guyana. This, he said, could see an additional $50,000 monthly in the pockets of the 10-day workers.

Mahipaul declared that Guyana’s oil revenues will be more than sufficient to finance the coalition’s plans for the country. He accused the incumbent People’s Progressive Party government as being deceitful and out of touch with the needs of ordinary Guyanese, and positioned the APNU as the better alternative. “All the PPP is doing is lying, and we cannot have them there for another term…. the choice you have to make, the choice you and I have to make come September 1 is between the palm of the hands and the cup, and I will be voting for the palm of the hands,” Mahipaul said.

Notably, with all the plans that the APNU has for citizens and the country’s development, Mahipaul made it clear that the coalition has no plans to increase taxes, pointing instead to the growing oil revenues as the financial foundation for APNU’s development agenda.

“I want to say that under the APNU and Aubrey Norton, there will be no increases in any tax, none whatsoever.”

He argued that revenues garnered from ExxonMobil Guyana Limited (EMGL) oil operation at the offshore Stabroek Block would be sufficient to finance the party’s initiatives. Mahipaul emphasised that Guyana’s offshore oil production currently supported by Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels, will bring in even greater revenues in the coming years when more FPSOs come on stream.

“Our country has [three] FPSOs functioning… for those who don’t know, FPSO is a big ship [that] can give you so much money. In the next two years, we will have two more, and before the five years, we will have 10 in total,” Mahipaul said.

“So if [three] is giving us so much, imagine what 10 would give…That is why the plan that Aubrey Norton has, the plan that Juretha [Fernandes] has, the plan that the APNU has, it can be financed by oil alone,” he added.

Furthermore, Mahipaul wrapped up his address by calling on the supporters to reject the PPP, which he accused of neglecting the people. He said, “We have allowed the cantankerous to occupy that office, and they have not been delivering for us. It is time that we chase them out, and September one we will get rid of them.” He continued, “There is nothing. There is absolutely nothing that the People’s Progressive Party can tell us to convince us that they really and truly care for us. If the PPP was doing so well, then so many of you would not have been out here… You are fed up. We are fed up, and it is time to kick them out.”
