Kaieteur news- The Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) has condemned what it described as a verbal attack on its party leader, Dr. Simona Charles Broomes, by a member of the public, while in the presence of police officers at the Regional Division 4 ‘B’ Police Headquarters.
The incident which occurred on Tuesday, unfolded during a live broadcast on Broomes’ personal Facebook page.
According to a statement released by the party on Wednesday, the attacker, identified as Ossie Winston Rodgers, verbally assaulted Dr. Broomes and other female party members. Despite being in the presence of law enforcement officers, the verbal abuse went unchecked.
“When Dr. Broomes attempted to report the man for hurling insults and abuse, officers on duty blatantly refused to take her report or offer any assistance against the unprovoked attack,” the statement read.
The ALP criticised the police’s failure to act, stating, “This unacceptable failure by the police reflects a deepening crisis in public trust and accountability. It also takes place in a climate where women across Guyana are being targeted at a frightening rate, too often without consequence.”
Dr. Broomes, who now leads the ALP, has been a long-time advocate for the rights and dignity of women and girls across the country. The party emphasised that the treatment she received underscores the broader challenges faced by women in public life.
“This movement will not be silenced. We will press forward, and we will charge this fight until systems of powers serve every citizen without bias, without fear and without delay.” ALP stated.
