Kaieteur News – Five men are hospitalized following a three-way crash on Tuesday along the Rupert Craig Highway, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Among the injured are, Neil Lewis, Kamel Daniels and Narayan Sikandar, drivers of the three cars involved in the crash.
Lewis, 63, was the driver a hire car bearing registration number HD 3223 while Daniels was the driver of PAK 9877. Sikandar was driving an orange Altezza, PMM 3778. The two other injured men were passengers in Lewis’ car.
Police reports are that Daniels was driving his car PAK 9877 east along the northern driving lane of the highway. He was allegedly speeding when he lost control of his car in the vicinity of the UG Access Road.
“…The vehicle swerved south into and over the concrete median which separates the northern and southern carriageways,” police said, while adding that the front of his car collided with the right portion of Sikandar’s car which was proceeding west.
The impact then pushed Sikandar’s car into Lewis’ hire car also proceeding west.
“As a result of the three-vehicle collision, the vehicles were damaged extensively, and the drivers of all three vehicles, along with the two occupants, received injuries on their bodies,” police detailed.
All of them were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) by public-spirited citizens.
Sikandar reportedly suffered a fractured right arm while the others were treated for pains in the chest, as well as lacerations about the face. Their conditions are regarded as stable.
A cellphone recorded video of the crash painted an almost gruesome picture. The vehicles were mangled and all of the occupants appeared unconscious. Sikandar was seen lying in his car while other victims were seen lying on the roadway.
After receiving the news and hearing about the video, Sikandar’s sister made a Facebook post.
She wrote, “woke-up to phone call from my sister-in-law saying my brother was in an accident and there’s a video of the crash on Facebook already.”
“I refuse to believe that’s the last time I’d see my brother alive. But it’s not up to me to make that call. My prayers are going out to the medical team working to help him through this,” she added.
