Kaieteur News – A Lima Sands, Essequibo Coast, Region Two man was killed on Friday following a row over a cigarette burn he received from a man he was consuming alcohol with.
Dead is 46-year-old Gary Melville.
Melville reportedly died between 20:00h and 05:30h at Lima Sands, Essequibo Coast.
“Enquiries disclosed that the now-deceased man and the suspect were friends and both resided in the same area,” police said.
A female shopkeeper said that the suspect, along with the victim and others, went to the shop, where they drank alcohol. The woman said that the suspect was drinking a bottle of High Wine while the victim was drinking 592 beers. They were both seated at the same table.
The shopkeeper said she overheard the suspect complaining that Melville burnt him with a cigarette after which she saw the two men in a scuffle. Shortly thereafter, the shopkeeper said she saw the suspect bleeding from his head and the victim on the ground.
Another female in the shop intervened and ‘parted’ the two men. Melville was then seen walking in a northern direction after leaving the shop.
About ten minutes later, the suspect hopped on his motorcycle and left in the same direction as Melville.
At around 05:30 hrs on Saturday, a 48-year-old woman from the area was walking on the Lima Sands public road when she saw Melville’s lying motionless on the eastern side of the road. She raised an alarm and the police were summoned.
At the scene, investigators observed injuries to the back of Melville’s hands, right knee, both feet and face.
His body was taken to the Suddie Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect was contacted by police and during their meeting, police noticed that he bore injuries to his hands. He was taken to the Oscar Joseph District Hospital, where he was treated and sent away. He is in police custody assisting with investigations.
