(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development has received 38 bids to construct a new Zeelugt Market facility in Region Three.
Bids for the project were opened at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) recently. No engineer’s estimate was provided, but the project will be done in four lots.
According to NPTAB, the contractors bid between $200 million and $797 million for the different lots.
Kaieteur News understands that the projects will form part of the $18 billion that was approved from the national budget for market projects across the country. In addition to constructing new markets like Zeelugt, the money will cater to rehabilitate the structures at Port Kaituma, Bath, Railway Line, Unity, Rose Hall and Lethem, to name a few.
Having visited several market spaces between last year and this year, Local Government Minister, Priya Manickchand disclosed during one of these visits that markets remain critical economic hubs within communities, providing livelihoods for hundreds of families while ensuring access to fresh produce and goods for residents. She noted that through her ministry emphasis is placed on improving infrastructure, enhancing sanitation facilities, addressing drainage concerns, and creating a more organised and resilient space for vendors and customers alike.
Below are the companies and their bids:
