(Kaieteur News) – Another mining operation in Region Seven was reportedly targeted by heavily armed gunmen on Sunday, less than a week after bandits carried out a multi-million-dollar robbery against two Brazilian miners in the same area.
Kaieteur News has received information from a reliable source that the latest attack occurred in the Sewanda Backdam area, where armed robbers struck on June 15 and escaped with more than 45 ounces of raw gold, cash, jewellery, ATVs and other valuables worth approximately $44.6 million.
Efforts to contact police in the region for official confirmation of Sunday’s incident were unsuccessful up to press time. However, information reaching this publication indicates that the latest robbery occurred in the same area as the earlier attack.
Kaieteur News had reported on June 18 that four masked men, armed with firearms, allegedly carried out a brazen daylight robbery at two separate mining operations in Sewanda Backdam between 10:00 hrs. and 17:30 hrs. on June 15.
According to reports, the victims were two Brazilian national gold miners, ages 50 and 44, who operate mining camps located approximately 200 metres apart.
Investigators were told that the armed men first descended on the camp operated by the 44-year-old miner while he and his workers were conducting mining activities.
The gunmen allegedly held the workers at gunpoint and ordered them to complete the wash-down process before carting off 15 ounces of raw gold, $150,000 in cash, and a red ATV. The stolen items were valued at approximately $15.4 million.
The suspects then moved to the second mining operation, where they again held workers at gunpoint and forced them to complete a wash-down.
There, they robbed the 50-year-old miner of 30 ounces of raw gold, a 20-pennyweight gold chain, a 20-pennyweight gold band, a six-pennyweight gold ring, $300,000 in cash, and a red ATV. The stolen items were valued at approximately $29.265 million.
The bandits also escaped with clothing, groceries and internet equipment before fleeing the area.
During the ordeal, the 50-year-old miner was allegedly assaulted and sustained injuries.
Police subsequently recovered the two stolen ATVs abandoned near the Puruni River, but the suspects remain at large.
