Kaieteur News – An early morning accident at Lichfield Village, West Coast Berbice has left two persons dead, after the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a bus shed destroying it completely, killing himself and another man in the process.
The driver has been identified as 29-year-old-Davin Daniels also called ‘Scalpy’, of Hopetown Village, and while the occupant of the bus shed was identified as Mark George, 49 also called ‘Chateo,’ of Lot 2 Belle Vue, West Coast Berbice.
George was reportedly waiting in the bus shed to be picked up by his employer to go to work. The incident reportedly occurred around 05:30hrs.
According to police, the car was proceeding east along the northern side of Belle Vue public road at a fast rate when the driver lost control of the vehicle, swerved to the southern side of the road, and collided with a ‘greens (vegetable) stand’. The car continued further east and collided with a bus shed where George was sitting. The car continued further east and collided with a utility pole on the southern side of the road, where the vehicle came to a halt. As a result of the collision, the light pole broke and fell, in the process crushing a wash bay shed.
Reports are that the impact caused George’s entrails to pop out, and his body appeared limp, and, according to eyewitnesses, may have suffered multiple broken bones.
Videos of the scene show the bus shed totally dismantled, with crumbled walls and bent sheets. George’s body was observed among the rubble clad in a bluish grey T-shirt and black three-quarter pants. A young man was observed picking up his body to place it on a white sheet on the ground, while relatives and friends wailed in agony. Multiple wounds were observed on the man’s remains.
Another video showed the driver clad in a black T-shirt with a grey long pants lying motionless, with cuts on his swollen face. Further down in the video, his body was observed wrapped in a sheet at the back of an ambulance.
The men were transported to Fort Wellington Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival. The bodies are currently at Bailey’s Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
George was described by family members as a jolly, quiet and helpful person. “My uncle was a hardworking, friendly person. Jovial and making jokes but at the same time when it was serious time, it was serious time. Uncle Marco never used to joke about work and them things but he was a good soul,” his nephew told this publication.
