Kaieteur Sports – Guyana Cup 2025 is off and running, sparking a surge of excitement across the country and beyond. With sweeping changes and international flair, this year’s edition of Guyana’s premier horse racing event promises to be the most electrifying yet.
The official race day is set for Sunday, August 17, at Rising Sun Turf Club. Gates open at 9:00 am, with the first post at 11:00 am sharp; a new change to accommodate a packed 11-race card.
Each race will be run 35 minutes apart, ensuring a non-stop adrenaline rush from flag fall to the final furlong.
In a push for higher standards, the promoter has issued clear directives that all horses must be on the grounds by 8:00 am or they will be scratched. Jockeys must report to the jockeys’ room by 10:00 am, with penalties in place for tardiness.
Following the official launch of the 17th running of the Guyana Cup last Tuesday, anticipation is building for the country’s biggest day in racing, a true crown jewel on the Caribbean turf calendar.
Promoter Nasrudeen Jr. Mohamed continues to prove why he’s considered one of the most visionary minds in the region’s racing industry.
During the press launch, Mohamed unveiled two groundbreaking additions to the race card—events never before contested on Guyanese soil.
The announcement sent shockwaves through stables and paddocks from Georgetown to Brazil and across the West Indies.
The first of the two new features is an Open Juvenile, exclusively for 2-year-old imported thoroughbreds foaled in 2023; a first-of-its-kind event in Guyana.
The second, dubbed “The Derby,” is a high-purse showdown open to both Brazilian-bred and West Indian-bred runners, setting the stage for a true regional turf war.
These historic inclusions were made possible by recently passed horse racing legislation, a turning point Mohamed credits to the unwavering support of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, and by extension, the Government of Guyana.
The promoter extended heartfelt thanks to the Sports Ministry for helping elevate the Sport of Kings to its rightful stature.
Since the announcement, the local racing fraternity has been buzzing with renewed energy. Owners, trainers, jockeys, and stable staff are now preparing at full gallop, as expectations climb and competition stiffens.
Many owners have already taken swift action, acquiring top-tier bloodstock from overseas, some dispatching agents, while others flew out personally to secure elite contenders.
According to industry insiders, “straight from the horse’s mouth,” at least 21 horses are being airlifted from Brazil, with many already purchased but now expedited due to the demand. Meanwhile, seven imported two-year-olds from Miami are confirmed to touch down shortly, with more expected in the run-up to race day.
This influx of imports highlights the accelerating growth and professionalization of the sport under Mohamed’s leadership.
With international contenders, unprecedented stakes, and a revitalized industry now bolstered by proper regulation and ambition, the 2025 Guyana Cup is shaping up to be a defining moment in Caribbean horse racing.
