The trophies up for graps

Kaieteur Sports – What began as a modest pilot project during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 has blossomed into one of the country’s most successful youth sports initiatives.

The Guyana Golf Association (GGA) and Nexgen Golf Academy, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, initially introduced golf into just six secondary schools. Four years later, the programme has evolved into a national sensation.

With unwavering support from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the Guyana Tourism Authority, and a wide network of corporate and individual sponsors, golf has emerged as the fastest-growing sport in Guyana.

Thousands of students now take part in the game during Physical Education classes, and this year, more than 350 students opted to sit golf as an elective at the CSEC examinations—a historic milestone for the sport locally.

The continued success of the youth golf programme will be showcased in full swing on Wednesday, July 3, when the Third Annual National Junior Golf Championship unfolds at the Nexgen Golf Academy on Woolford Avenue.

The tournament, jointly hosted by the GGA, Nexgen Golf Academy, and the Ministry of Education, will feature 350 student golfers representing six regions.

Defending champions Leguan Secondary School (Region Three) will be eyeing a third consecutive national title, but they’ll face stiff competition from a strong field of up-and-coming talents determined to shake up the leaderboard.

In addition to the main junior championship, this year’s event will include a CPCE Teachers Competition, further expanding the sport’s reach and engagement among educators.

The championship is being held with the generous backing of key sponsors and partners, including: ExxonMobil Guyana, Ministry of Education, Guyana Tourism Authority, Regal Stationery and Computer Centre, Sunshine Snacks, Guyana Beverages, Sterling Products Limited, Shangri-La Gardens, Praetorian Security Services and University of Guyana Vice-Chancellor Paloma Mohamed.

Toolsie Persaud Limited, Trophy Stall, TMK 2000 Inc., MovieTowne Guyana, Telco Solutions and Mobile Advertising, Pegasus Hotel and Suites, Captain Gerry Gouveia (Roraima Airways), Dustin Spivey, TriStone Auto, and the Edward B. Beharry Group of Companies are also onboard.

Participation in the championship is completely free of cost.

All players will receive meals, snacks, and beverages, with transportation for competitors from Regions Two, Three, Five, and Six made possible through the assistance of Commissioner of Police Clifford Hicken.
