Kaieteur News- Dem boys been waiting fuh hear wha really cause de sugar production fuh fall again. Dem had dey money pon drought. De place been dry, breeze been blowing like it get vex, and some parts even ketch fire. Dem boys seh “Ah ha! Drought mash up de cane!” But lo and behold, dem big ones seh nah, is de rain!
Yes man, is not de fire, not de sun, not de drought, not de low morale, not de outta wuk factory parts, not even de ghost of Bookers. Is de rain!
Dem boys seh if rain could cause sugar production to drop, then how dem expect to make sugar in a tropical country where rain falling more than promise at election time? One man seh if sugar was in Saudi Arabia, maybe we mighta meet target—less rain there.
But dem boys seh if de big boss seh is rain, then it gotta be rain. Just like how dem seh oil contract good. We must believe.
But leh we be real—rain ain’t no surprise. Rain like a relative who ain’t ever call but does still show up fuh lunch. Yuh gotta plan fuh it. Sugar estate is not backyard garden. Yuh can’t just watch de sky and guess. Dem boys seh even school children know rainy season from dry season.
Yet every year we surprise! Sugar fall? Rain! Flood? Rain! Rice late? Rain! Pothole? Rain again! One fella seh if dem blame rain one more time, he gon carry umbrella to de next press conference.
Dem boys seh sugar production nah falling because of rain—it falling because de system nah wukkin. Sugar is dead. But nobody want admit dat. Easier fuh seh is de clouds.
Rain or shine, one thing always sure—sugar production falling, and somebody else to blame.
Dem boys seh maybe next year de excuse gon be dew.
Talk half. Leff half.
