Kaieteur News- East Coast traffic is not just a national headache. Is a life lesson. Is a whole university degree in patience, tolerance, and finding new cuss words every morning without repeating last week own.
Dem boys seh if yuh could survive that East Coast crawl from Lusignan to GT, yuh could get a job as a Formula 1 driver—or at least as a diplomat, ’cause it tek real skill to smile while people cutting in front yuh like dem own de road.
But leh we give credit where credit due. Thanks to the PPP/C, every man, woman, and dem pickney could afford a car now. One man seh he register he car in March with PAK 9000, and by May de thing reach PAK 16,000. Dem got more PAKs pon de road than paracetamol in a pharmacy.
And dem building road too—everywhere yuh turn got some trench full up and some new bypass coming. But till de bypass done bypass, is back-to-back bumper hugging. Is de only time Guyanese does show unity—when we jam up together in traffic like sardine.
But don’t worry, traffic got it sweet side. Yuh does finally get time to meditate on yuh sins or yuh lotto numbers. Some people does listen to old R&B and cry quietly when Whitney sing “I Will Always Love You.” Others does blast chutney and others does eat dem breakfast, lunch and dinner while still in traffic.
And lemme tell yuh, nobody more creative than a Guyanese explaining why dem late. Dem traffic tales does mek Grimm Brothers look like amateurs. From “a donkey cross de road slow-slow” to “de third lane ain’t open yet,” dem got excuses more than dem got gas in de tank.
Dem boys seh if traffic get any worse, people gon start packing hammocks and cooking pots in de car. Some even practising remote working from de driver seat. Laptop on dashboard and Zoom in traffic light.
But remember, traffic is not punishment. Is preparation—for when yuh reach heaven and de man at de gate tell yuh, “Hold on lil bit. De line long.”
Talk half. Leff half.

(Kaieteur News) – I asked a middle-aged woman if she knew Rabbi Washington. She vaguely recalled the name but nothing more. This is exactly how most of our collective memory works these days.
