(Kaieteur News) – Dem Boys seh Guyana got a special breed of cricket fan. You buy a CPL ticket and on that ticket, in black and white, it got your stand, section, row and seat number. Is not a treasure map. Is not a suggestion. Is not a horoscope telling you where you feel you should sit.
But as soon as some fans enter the stadium, dem boys seh the ticket becomes optional reading. The ushers pointing people to dem assigned seats, but some spectators behaving like dem got ancestral rights to a completely different section.
If somebody friends and family sitting in Section A, but your ticket say Section C, you simply migrate to Section A. Why? Because apparently friendship stronger order. Ya got people sitting in seats that don’t belong to dem, waiting for the rightful owner to arrive. And when the rightful owner comes, dem don’t get up. Suddenly, the person sitting in your seat looking at you as if you invading his home.
Then comes the famous Guyanese negotiation.
“Boss, I sitting here.”
“Yes, but this is my seat.”
“Yeah, but me people over here.”
And some of dem does pretend that dem in the right seat. Others does tell you to sit in some other vacant seat. But what happens when you oblige and the rightful person then turns up for their seat. You now have to face embarrassment and all because someone who is sitting in your seat does not want to be inconvenienced.
Some people don’t even have a ticket for the stand where dem sitting. Some don’t even have a ticket for the match but how dem pass through the gates nobody knows. Yet somehow dem sitting comfortably in your seat and making styles to remove. When the rightful ticket holder insists, the matter escalates. Ushers get called. Officials get called. Sometimes police get called. All because somebody apparently believes a CPL ticket means, “Sit anywhere you see an empty chair.”
Meanwhile, people who actually paid for their seats are standing in the aisles waiting to be seated. Others behind them can’t see the cricket. The game going on, but the real competition taking place in the stands: Guyana versus the Seat Invader.
Dem boys seh dis does only happen in Guyana. You don’t see that happening in Trinidad, Barbados, Jamaica and St. Lucia. By the time the reluctant seat squatter is removed, half the game done. And who are seated behind the melee miss the sweetest part because persons haggling over seats.
Talk half. Leff half.
