(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Education is mourning the loss of three members of the education community who died in separate road accidents within a three-day period.
The victims are 10-year-old Gabriela Rodrigues, 14-year-old Giresh Lautan and 51-year-old Sonia Williams, a longstanding Berbice educator.
Rodrigues, of 17 James Street, Georgetown, and a pupil of Ketley Primary School, was reportedly struck down on Saturday along Independence Boulevard by a teenager riding a motorcycle.
Reports are that the rider was performing a stunt when he collided with the child.
Rodrigues was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where she subsequently succumbed to severe internal bleeding, cardiac failure, punctured lungs and major head injuries.
Earlier that morning, Lautan, a student of Skeldon Line Path Secondary School and resident of No. 52 Village, Corentyne, died at the scene after the motorcycle on which he was travelling slammed into a horse at No. 50 Village, Corentyne.
Lautan was reportedly the pillion rider, while his uncle-in-law operated the motorcycle at what his mother described to Kaieteur News as a fast rate.
On Monday, Williams, the Graduate Headmistress of Kildonan Primary School and a resident of Kilcoy/Chesney Housing Scheme, Corentyne, was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Rose Hall Town.
Williams had reportedly completed an errand at an insurance company and was standing at the door of her parked car when another vehicle slammed into her. The driver then fled the scene.
Police in Region Six apprehended the driver on Tuesday. He was identified as 35-year-old Arivindra Singh of Hampshire, Corentyne.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry of Education said Minister Sonia Parag and the entire ministry were “deeply heartbroken” by the deaths of the three members of the education community.
“We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to their grieving families, loved ones and school communities during this time of profound sorrow. May their souls rest in eternal peace,” the ministry stated.
The ministry also highlighted Williams’ more than 30 years of dedicated service to education, noting the sentiments expressed by teachers across Region Six about her commitment and contribution to the profession.
Lamenting the three deaths, the ministry urged motorists to exercise greater caution and vigilance on the roadways and to comply with road safety regulations.
It also urged parents and guardians to reinforce traffic rules and safety precautions with their children, including outside of the school setting, to help protect lives.
