…says police already outlined findings
Kaieteur News- Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo emphasized on Thursday that there is no need for the family of 11-year-old Adriana Younge to be given a copy of the preliminary autopsy report, as the findings have already been publicly outlined by the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
“They [the police] made it clear from the beginning that there were findings… that was told to the family, and they [the police] outlined what the findings are,” Jagdeo said. “The police issued a statement outlining the findings. They are waiting on the toxicology report to issue the final report,” he told Kaieteur News in response to questions on the report.
Jagdeo, following his weekly press conference held at Freedom House, Robb Street, Georgetown, dismissed concerns raised by Adriana’s family and attorney Dr. Dexter Todd on the provision of a physical copy of the preliminary findings.
The Vice President reiterated that the family had been briefed following the post-mortem examination (PME) and that the police’s recent public statement contained all the relevant details.
However, Dr. Todd has since submitted a formal written request for a copy of the preliminary findings, but received no response from the police.
“The findings were outlined in a police document to the public, so he [Todd] knows what the findings are because they put it out, including what happened with the mucus in the nose and everything. There is no sexual assault, there is no trauma; this is from the physical examinations of the body. They called it drowning. But they are waiting on the toxicology report, and only then you could have a full autopsy report,” Jagdeo told Kaieteur News.
The Vice President, who is also General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC), also said that Adriana’s family acknowledged receiving the said information. “They told the family this—that’s why the family came out and said they were told this. Their own doctor and Darren Wade [also knew],” he added.
Kaieteur News reminded the Vice President that Adriana’s family has been requesting a physical copy of the preliminary report rather than the public statement the police issued.
He responded, “That is the preliminary findings. That is what happened. I don’t know what they want…they want another finding?”
Three weeks have passed since the PME was conducted on Adriana’s body, which determined that the child drowned.
On May 7, the police issued a press statement with preliminary findings but did not provide a formal report to the family.
The press release was issued following a meeting among Adriana’s family, their attorneys, and Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken, who was accompanied by some senior officers of the Force.
During that meeting, the Commissioner reportedly stated that no preliminary autopsy report was available at the time. However, just hours later, the GPF released a public statement outlining what it described as “preliminary findings” from the PME.
In its statement, the GPF said that while the final report would only be completed after toxicological and histological analyses, they felt “compelled to share” the early findings due to what they described as a “barrage of misinformation being peddled on social media intended to confuse and cause public mischief.”
The release appeared to address concerns raised by the family’s attorney, who had questioned whether the cause of death had been prematurely declared.
“The Guyana Police Force wishes to make it abundantly clear that it was the relatives of the deceased, their lawyer, and the doctor representing the family who divulged to the press and published on social media the preliminary finding of the cause of death—drowning—from the forensic examination. Thus, the Guyana Police Force categorically rejects the contention of Dexter Todd that the Police, prematurely or at all, released the preliminary finding of the cause of death to the public.”
In a detailed seven-point release, the GPF outlined its preliminary autopsy findings: No evidence of sexual assault – external genitalia examined, hymen intact; no traumatic injuries – soft tissues and skeletal structure were unremarkable; foam cone found in nostrils and mouth – often seen in drowning cases; “Washerwoman” skin changes – consistent with prolonged water immersion; no antemortem injuries – skin was intact prior to death; liquid in sphenoid sinus – a brain cavity; also consistent with drowning; liquid in lungs – another key indicator of drowning.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Dr. Todd confirmed that, despite formally requesting a copy of the report, he nor the family had received the preliminary autopsy findings. “We do not have a preliminary report as yet,” Dr. Todd told Kaieteur News.
Adriana’s body was discovered by her father, Subryan Younge, in the swimming pool of the Double Day Hotel at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, on April 24, nearly 20 hours after she was reported missing during a family swimming trip. The PME was conducted on April 28 by Barbadian pathologist Dr. Shubhakar Karra Paul at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). Observing the examination were two international experts: Dr. Gary L. Collins, Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Delaware, and Dr. Glenn A. Rudner of Mount Sinai Hospital, New York.
Although the PME confirmed drowning as the cause of death, the exact time of death remains unknown, and toxicology results are pending.
Unconvinced by the findings, Adriana’s family has formally requested an independent review of the PME documentation. They have also confirmed that a second autopsy will be conducted in the United States. The body is expected to be flown out by next week.
