Kaieteur News- Dem boys seh social media now become de new town crier. Anything happen, people ain’t waiting fuh de 7 o’clock news or even de newspaper next day. As soon as something buss, is phone light up and everybody become overnight journalist, editor and commentator.
De other day when dat 11-year-old child meet her unfortunate end, social media run faster than minibus on a downhill. But instead of just spreading de facts, people start fabricating stories like tailor. All of a sudden, everybody know wha happen—even de ones who wasn’t near de scene. Anger spread faster than answers.
Dem boys seh is one thing to want justice and answers, but when people start to spread lie pon top of lie, is more harm than good. Is like throwing gas pon a blaze. People does read one post and done ready fuh storm de street.
Some of dem who posting ain’t even care bout de truth. Dey just want agitate and incite. And some of dem, if trouble bruk out, does hide behind a keyboard and seh, “Not me.”
Dem boys seh Government need fuh wake up and smell de smoke. Social media is like a cutlass—yuh could use it to clean yuh yard or chop somebody neck. Right now, too many people using it fuh stir up confusion.
Yuh can’t leave dis ting unguarded like free rum at a wedding. Is time fuh de authorities start tracking down dem who pushing false story and charging dem.
Dem boys seh freedom of speech is one ting, but freedom fuh lie and incite violence is another. De same way yuh can’t holler fire in a crowded cinema, yuh shouldn’t be allowed fuh holler lie pon Facebook and start riot.
At de end of de day, dem boys seh social media ain’t de problem—it’s how people using it. But if yuh use a gun reckless, yuh still gon get charge. Same rule should apply to de ones using social media fuh light fire.
