Kaieteur News- A boat crash in the Corentyne River, Region Six, on Saturday has left one dead and another injured.
Dead is 65-year-old Glen Devair, also known as Lewis Devair and “Shiko”, a former Toshao of Orealla Village, Region Six, while 29-year-old Shunika Williams, a nurse, is nursing injuries.
Williams is also from Orealla Village.
Devair, at the time of his death, was working as the boat captain for the Ministry of Health’s River Ambulance, assigned to the Orealla/Siparuta district.
He and the nurse had left during the wee hours of Saturday to transport a patient to Corriverton, Berbice, but reportedly never returned.
A search party was later sent out and found the boat. Reports are that the boat was found among some trees along the left bank of the Corentyne River.
Devair was motionless while the nurse was found badly injured.
They were both rushed to the nearest health facility in Berbice, where doctors pronounced Devair dead, and the nurse was admitted for treatment.
As investigations continue, an outpouring of tributes for the former Toshao flooded social media.
Laura George, an official of the Amerindian Peoples Association (APA), said, “Dear Orealla/Siparuta Village, we are shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic passing of former Toshao Lewis Devair. Toshao Devair also captained our boat only last Saturday afternoon to bring my team and me out from Orealla. We wish to extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends and the entire community.”
