Kaieteur News- Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) and Shadow Foreign Minister Amanza Walton-Desir, has called for an urgent meeting of the Parliamentary Sectoral Committee on Foreign Relations, following the latest ruling from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the Guyana-Venezuela border controversy.
In an Order issued on May 1, 2025, the ICJ reaffirmed its provisional measures from December 2023 and, by a vote of 12-3, ruled that Venezuela must refrain from conducting or preparing to conduct elections in the disputed Essequibo region. The ICJ confirmed the area remains lawfully administered by Guyana. However, Venezuela has continued to signal its intention to proceed with plans that involve the territory, a move Guyana considers a violation of international law and a threat to its sovereignty.
“In this moment of national importance, the non-functioning of the Parliamentary Sectoral Committee on Foreign Relations is deeply alarming,” MP Walton-Desir said.
She added, “This Committee is charged with oversight of Guyana’s foreign policy and must be mobilised immediately to facilitate bipartisan dialogue and strategic national response.”
Moreover, Walton-Desir also raised broader concerns about the failure of multiple parliamentary committees to meet regularly, warning it reflects democratic backsliding.
“At a time when unity, vigilance, and institutional readiness are critical, this parliamentary inertia on this matter is not only irresponsible but is also a disservice to the nation,” she noted.
