Slingerz FC to host Den Amstel on Saturday in ‘West Side’ Derby
– Football returns to the National Track & Field Centre
Kaieteur Sports- Slingerz Football Club will play their first home match at the National Track and Field Centre tomorrow, since returning to the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League last season, when they take on their ‘West Side’ rivals, Den Amstel FC at 9:00 pm.
The highly anticipated clash is being dubbed the ‘West Side’ derby, with Den Amstel hailing from West Demerara and Slingerz FC representing the East Bank of Essequibo village of Vergenoegen.
It will be the second game of a double-header, following the 6:30 pm. encounter between Fruta Conquerors and Monedderlust FC.
Slingerz FC will look to maintain their winning record against Den Amstel FC on April 26.
Under the guidance of coach Jamaal Shabazz, Slingerz FC remains the only unbeaten team in the GFF Elite League this season. The team boasts four consecutive wins, the highest goal tally in the league (25), and the fewest goals conceded (2).
Currently topping the table with 12 points, Slingerz FC face a Den Amstel side coming off a narrow 2-1 loss to Santos FC in their last outing.
Den Amstel sit fourth in the standings, trailing Santos, the Guyana Police Force, and league leaders Slingerz FC.
The Lions have played four games, recording two wins, one draw, and one loss. They have netted 16 goals while conceding seven, the fourth most in the league.
In the evening’s opening fixture, Monedderlust and Fruta Conquerors, two teams struggling for consistency, will look to turn their season around in what will be their sixth match of the campaign.
Monedderlust have two wins and three losses from their five outings, while Fruta Conquerors have managed one win, two draws, and two defeats.
Darron Niles has been facilitator and scorer for Slingerz FC this season.
The team from #5 Village, West Coast Berbice, has conceded 15 goals, second only to league cellar-dwellers Mainstay Goldstar, who have let in 44. Monedderlust has found the net just seven times in their five matches.
Fruta Conquerors, meanwhile, are hoping for a stronger offensive showing from their youthful squad, who have only managed six goals so far, only slightly better than Western Tigers (4) and Mainstay Goldstar (3).
