Kaieteur News- The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) joins with Guyana’s medical fraternity to celebrate Medical Laboratory Professionals Week – April 20 to 26, 2025. The theme for this year, as determined by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), is: “Mystery Machine of Diagnostics: Another Case Solved by the Lab.”
The contributions of Laboratory Professionals to our country’s health sector continue to grow as more and more medical laboratories open their doors to provide the array of testing needed for the diagnosis of sicknesses and diseases. GNBS would like to especially recognise professionals within those labs that have developed, implemented and maintained a Laboratory Management System within their operations to ensure the provision of reliable results.
The Bureau’s engagements with laboratory professionals at all levels remain high as they take advantage of key GNBS services, including Training, Technical Assistance and Laboratory Certification. Over the years, the Bureau has provided these services to medical laboratories to improve the quality of services they provide to patients, doctors and others seeking reliable testing services locally.
For training, over the last three years, a total of 28 sessions were conducted by GNBS for medical laboratory professionals, which saw 276 of them participating and benefiting from these training programmes, laboratory technicians and quality managers were able build their competence to implement and maintain the requirements of the GYS 170:2021 Standard, the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Standard, ISO 15189:2012 Standard, and the GYS 235:2024 Lab Safety Standard.
Meanwhile, under its technical assistance programme, the GNBS works closely with several medical labs towards certification to the GYS 170:2021 Standard – General requirements for the operation of a laboratory. Under this programme, GNBS Technical Officers provide crucial support and guidance to staff of medical and testing laboratories to streamline their lab operations to fulfill the requirements for certification. Additionally, the support provided has allowed some medical facilities to attain international certification.
Today, there are thirty medical labs certified by the GNBS, including the Dr. Balwant Singh Hospital Laboratory, Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation Medical Laboratory, Eureka Medical Laboratories Inc. (Georgetown), St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Laboratory, Georgetown Medical Centre Laboratory, Quest Medical Laboratory, Anamayah Memorial Hospital Laboratory, Caresworth Medical Centre Laboratory, Caribbean Surgery Inc. Laboratory, Davis Memorial Hospital Laboratory, Doobay-Gafoor Medical and Research Centre Laboratory, Dr. Leslie Persaud Medical Diagnostic Centre, Dr. Dalip Medical Centre Laboratory, Max Hanoman Medical Laboratory, National Public Health Reference Laboratory and the Woodlands Hospital Laboratory. More than half of these laboratories attained GNBS certification in the last three years.
GNBS congratulates professionals working in these labs for their diligence and commitment towards ensuring that their lab operations are guided by standards. This demonstrates a commitment to quality, which benefits the wider populace looking to receive reliable medical testing.
