Kaieteur News- China’s Deputy Chief of Mission in Guyana, Huang Rui, has slammed the United States government for what he described as a one-sided tariff war, accusing Washington of using trade measures as a weapon to pressure other countries.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Rui warned that China will not stand by while its interests, or the rules of international trade, are threatened.
“Trade war or tariff war, I think it is a one-sided war. China doesn’t want to create any war,” Rui stated. He went on to accuse the US of using tariffs as a tool of economic pressure against its trading partners.
The diplomat made it clear that China would defend its national interests and the integrity of global trade systems if challenged.
“China is not one to fight these wars, but is not scared of them. We will not sit idly by when the Chinese people’s legitimate rights and interests are on the line or when the international trade rules or multilateral trade regime are sacrificed,” he warned.
His comments come at a time when the Donald Trump administration has announced a 38% reciprocal tariff on Guyanese goods entering the United States.
However, the reciprocal tariff is currently on a 90-day pause. The Government of Guyana has welcomed this pause and expressed hope that the issue can be resolved within that period.
Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo explained that the move was not unexpected, given that Trump campaigned on addressing trade imbalances between the US and various countries.
Further, he noted that in Guyana’s case, the US trade figures suggest a substantial trade surplus as Guyana exports more to the US than it imports, while Guyana’s data differs significantly. As a result, he assured Guyanese exporters that the government will seek to clarify the difference in the trade surplus data with the aim of potentially lowering the tariff.
“So, clearly there is room for us to work with the US partners to clarify this information,” Jagdeo said. He had assured exporters that the government will work with them to mitigate the impact of the tariff and noted that there is no need to panic.
He said, “I want to assure all of our exporters that we’ll work with them as we learn more of the issue. We will be meeting with them, working with them to ensure that they can continue to access the US markets and other markets in the world and they will have the full support of the government of Guyana and so that we do not lose economic, welfare, or welfare associated with the loss of economic output, this is like people losing jobs etcetera in the export industries.”
