—aunt of killed teenage bandit reacted to news of his death

Kaieteur News-  One of the deceased bandits in the botched supermarket robbery on Hadfield Street has been identified as 15-year-old Tyrese Adams of Pineapple Street, East Rimveldt.

His accomplice 22-year-old Orwin Garraway of 595 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme also lost his life in the said robbery. They were shot dead by the security guard on duty.

In a statement to the media the Guyana Police Force disclosed that enquiries indicate that four identifiable males armed with handguns, attempted to rob the Jai Jai Supermarket managed by 31-year-old Gan Zhang at about 19:30hrs Tuesday.   The supermarket’s bottom flat consists of two cashier boots on the eastern and western sides, and is secured by one armed security guard on a 12hrs basis, who was on duty at the time of the robbery.

He was armed with a 9mm pistol and 15 round of matching ammunition, when two of the suspects entered the establishment. They were both dressed in dark-coloured clothing, with black ski masks covering their faces and armed with handguns.

They went to the cashiers on either sides of the supermarket and one of them pointed his weapon at the male cashier, demanding he hands over the money. His accomplice proceeded to ransack the other cashier’s booth. “The armed security guard emerged from inside the supermarket and confronted the bandits, both of whom started running in an attempt to exit the supermarket. One of the suspects fell to the ground inside the supermarket, while the other ran out of the supermarket and fell onto the road about 15 feet west of the supermarket,” police said.

The guard recalled that when he exited the supermarket he observed there were two other suspects who were standing outside the supermarket, they started running west and made good their escape. There were two blue and black Haojue motorcycles one missing its number plate and the other bearing registration CP 623, parked in front of the supermarket with the keys still in the ignition.

Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned to the scene and Dr. Kellman of the Guyana Public Hospital Corporation pronounced both suspects dead. While processing the scene police discovered one Glock 17 with eight matching rounds next to one of the suspects. Additionally, there were thirteen live 9mm spent shells, one live 9mm round of ammunition, and three fragments were found inside the supermarket, while one 9mm spent shell and three fragments were found on the road in front of the supermarket.

The police disclosed that upon examination of the remains it was discovered that Garraway sustained suspected gunshot wounds in his right and left ribs, hands, nose and right shoulder, while Adams sustained suspected gunshot wounds in his upper right shoulder, stomach, one in his lower back and left hip.

The spent shells as well as the firearm were processed, sealed in evidence bags and lodged with the ballistics section for analysis. There were several persons questioned and footage from cameras attached to the supermarket were reviewed and extracted. The other suspects remain at large as checks made for them proved futile. The bodies of Garraway and Adams were taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, awaiting post-mortem examinations.

Meanwhile, Adams’ aunt in a post on her Facebook page said she was writing with a broken heart. “Rest up my nephew, God got you regardless, you wasn’t no pie but your family still loves you. If only you use to listen, just listen but God knows best.”

In a video clip circulating on social media his father who appeared visibly distraught said that, “They just kill meh big son, they just kill he baii. Even though he does deh pon stupidness…kill he. He and he friend they go fuh rob a Chinee jus now. Well duh is how life is go…Yess I.”

A resident of the community told this publication that she lived in the area with Adams and he was young enough to be her son. She said she was aware that the young man at one time attended the Lodge Secondary, but she was not aware of when he stopped. “I’m an outsider grow up in the same area he could be my son. He lost his mom at a very early age and he faced so much, as they say when mom gone, kids are alone to face this cold, cold world he is wrong yes but God knows best and when your family wash mouth on you hmm all his struggles are over,” she said.  Attempts to make contact with family members proved futile.
