At a simple ceremony at her Brickdam office, Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand said the government through her ministry has been building, rebuilding, and extending many schools at the primary, nursery, secondary, and dormitory level all across Guyana.
The minister said while works are not being executed through the central ministry they are being undertaken through the various Regional Administrations (1 to 10) which fall under the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development.
In relation to these projects, she said that not only the media, but parents and stakeholders have been calling the ministry to access information on the ongoing works for specific schools. She noted that while the information has been made public, it still has not been made public in one space.
“So, while we have gone to tender for all of these projects and they were in the newspaper and world-wide web and you could access it, it has not been in the same place, we haven’t done that and while we don’t have necessarily a duty to do it for you, we were very happy to do this because it also helps us,” she explained.
Manickchand said while the projects are important to the government, they are equally important to stakeholders.
“This is significant work going on in schools right now, across Guyana, nursery, primary, secondary and in dorms, and it’s all here for you to access in the name of transparency and accountability,” the minister said.
Providing a brief overview of the new tool which will be fully accessible via the ministry’s website during this week, the ministry’s Head of Information Systems, Phil Mingo said the tool will allow persons to navigate through the tabs – nursery, primary and secondary as well as dormitories.
On the ministry’s website persons will be provided with a map of Guyana showing the 10 administrative regions and an indication as to where in the regions projects are being undertaken.
According Mingo, the website will also provide the relevant information such as the name of the project, name of contractor, contract sum, tendering information, consultant’s name, and deadline, to name a few.
The ministry said that the tool is still in its testing phase and encouraged persons to utilize the site and report any inaccuracies.
