(Kaieteur News) – Police are investigating a dramatic shooting incident at Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, on Saturday night that left a 27-year-old man nursing a gunshot wound and under police guard.
According to reports, ranks in Regional Division #4 ‘C’ responded around 21:00hrs to information about a man allegedly seen walking in the area with a firearm. Upon arriving at the scene, officers made contact with the suspect, a resident of Better Hope.
Police said that upon seeing the ranks, the man allegedly pulled out a handgun and discharged several rounds in their direction, prompting officers to return fire. The suspect then fled south, scaling several fences as ranks gave chase before eventually apprehending him in a nearby yard.
A search conducted on the suspect led to the discovery of a black .32 CZ firearm on his person.
He was arrested and taken to the Sparendaam Police Station, where his hands were swabbed for gunpowder residue. The suspect was later escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for treatment after sustaining a gunshot injury to his right leg.
He remains under police guard as investigations continue.
