(Kaieteur News) – Police in Regional Divisions #4 ‘A’ and ‘C’ successfully removed two illegal firearms from the streets in separate operations conducted on Saturday evening, May 2, 2026. These operations resulted in the arrest of three men who currently remain in police custody.
At approximately 18:30hrs, ranks patrolling the Beterverwagting Public Road intercepted a 30-year-old motorcyclist from the Sparendaam Squatting Area. Although his documentation was valid, the man, who claimed to be a security officer, informed police that a firearm was in the possession of a colleague at a nearby business.
Ranks escorted the man to the location, where they encountered a 34-year-old security officer. The second suspect led officers to a fenced area on the premises, retrieving a 9mm Taurus pistol and a magazine containing ten live rounds hidden under lumber and a tarpaulin. Neither men could produce a security precept or a firearm licence.
Both were arrested and the weapon was lodged at the Beterverwagting Police Station. Later that night, at approximately 20:00hrs, a mobile patrol in Georgetown acted on intelligence regarding a man armed at the intersection of Regent and Light Streets. Upon being intercepted, the suspect, a 26-year-old Venezuelan national, reportedly attempted to draw an object from his waistband.
Officers quickly disarmed the individual, recovering a .38 revolver. An inspection of the weapon revealed five spent shells in the chamber. The suspect admitted he did not have a valid licence and was escorted to the Alberttown Police Station.
Investigations into both matters are ongoing, with authorities working to determine if the spent shells from the Georgetown arrest are linked to any recent reports of gunfire in the capital.
