Kaieteur Sports- The 11th Annual Milo/Massy Under-18 Schools Football Tournament, organized by the Petra Organisation, kicked off yesterday at the Ministry of Education and Queen’s College grounds in Georgetown. This highly anticipated competition will run for a month and feature 24 teams from the ten administrative regions, all vying for the coveted championship title and a $300,000 first-place prize, which will be allocated toward a school project of the winner’s choice.
Beyond the championship title, the tournament offers additional incentives. The top eight teams will automatically qualify for the upcoming ExxonMobil U18 Championship later this year, while the top two finishers will earn the opportunity to compete in the KFC International Goodwill Series in December. With several teams showcasing their competitive edge in the recently concluded elimination playoffs, this year’s tournament promises to be an intense and thrilling contest.
The traditional March Past event, a hallmark of the tournament’s opening ceremony, was won by Waramuri Top Secondary, whose banner boldly declared, “While having fun, we will take the crown. This year is we year.”
The opening ceremony was graced by several distinguished guests, including Deputy Chief Education Officer for Hinterland Development, Marti DeSouza; Head of the Allied Acts Unit, Nicolas Fraser; Milo Brand Representative, Tisha Miller; and Assistant Director of Sports, Franklin Wilson, among others.
Delivering the feature address, Miller expressed Milo’s enthusiasm for continuing its partnership with the Petra Organisation. “We at Milo are thrilled to be back as partners in this initiative, as part of Massy’s corporate and social responsibility. Being a force for good, we are committed to supporting a wide range of social, cultural, and economic initiatives,” she stated.
Miller emphasized that communities are at the heart of Milo’s business. Recognizing the importance of sports as a safe and constructive outlet for youth, she reaffirmed the brand’s commitment to supporting such events. “By participating in sports activities like this, students not only engage in meaningful competitive play but also create opportunities for their personal and professional growth,” she noted.
“Once again, we are excited to collaborate on this venture as we work towards shaping the future of our next generation,” Miller concluded.
With the tournament officially underway, anticipation is high as teams set their sights on championship glory.
