Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Golf team was in Tobago to challenge for top honors in one of the highest ranked regional golf championships – the 4-day Trinidad & Tobago Open held at the Magdelena Grand Beach Golf Course.
The tournament was opened by Prime Minister Keith Rowley who showcased his golf prowess by playing a few holes.
The T&T 2024 Open drew the top players from around the world to challenge for the coveted title which Trinidad has defended vigorously over the years.
Over 150 players from 9 countries participated including top athletes such as former cricketer Brian Lara.
After a grueling four days, the Guyana team acquitted themselves well despite the tough, windy conditions and challenging greens.
“Our players have the shot making skills to the conquer the course but we’re losing shots on the greens owing to the fact that the type of greens here are of a different standard. Once we can practice on similar greens in Guyana, our teams will contend in every tournament.” said GGA President Aleem Hussain.
Final scores were: Panko ‘Steel’ Ramsundar Gross 5th and Net 8th; Aleem Hussain Gross 10th and Net 6th; Monnaf Arjune Gross 14th and Net 15th; Roy Dhori Gross and Net 12th, Rakesh Harry Gross 11th and Net 10th and John Somwar withdrew with an injury after scoring 32 points on day 1.
According to T&T Golf Association President Wayne Baptiste, “It was great to see more Guyanese coming to challenge in international golf events over the past few years and this is due in part to the role that the Guyana Golf Association has played in interacting with other Golf Associations and building awareness of the sport in Guyana.
We are looking forward to seeing Juniors from their program taking part in regional golf championships.”
Players were given opportunities to take part in boat tours, heritage site visits and other recreational activities that showcase the hospitality of Trinidadians including the food and culture as a part of the tournament.
The Guyana team received golf hats and shirts from Digicel Business as part of the on-going support the company has given to Guyanese golfers who participated in tournaments in Trinidad, Barbados and Suriname.
