Kaieteur Sports – The University of Guyana has commenced an inquiry into allegations of nepotism pertaining to the selection process for athletes representing Guyana at the World University Games.
These concerns were initially raised by Kaieteur News sports journalist Rawle Toney and further echoed by the University’s Student Society through its president, Shaquawn Gill.
The team, entrusted with representing the nation at this esteemed event, was formed with the participation of individuals purported to be athletes.
Notably, the World University Games, attended by prominent global figures including President Irfaan Ali, were shadowed by the unsettling displacement of several student-athletes from the University of Guyana.
These displaced athletes expressed dissatisfaction, questioning the eligibility of an individual who lacked a recognisable athletic background.
In fact, the individual in question even failed to show up for their event at the games.
Social media posts have drawn striking parallels to a reminiscent incident at the World University Games involving a Somali athlete who astonishingly completed the 100m race in over 21 seconds.
Just as in the present case, this Somali athlete gained access not through athletic merit but through connections with a country official.
Consequently, the Minister of Sport in Somalia issued an apology to the Games’ organisers, and the head of Somali athletics was subjected to suspension.
The situation involving the University of Guyana is deeply disconcerting, underscoring concerns about fairness and transparency in the realm of sports representation.
The University of Guyana, through an official statement, expressed profound apprehension in response to the questions raised about the team’s selection.
Acknowledging these concerns, the Office of the Vice-Chancellor promptly initiated an internal investigation on August 7th, 2023.
This rigorous investigation seeks to identify potential violations of the University’s regulations, ethical standards, selection protocols, and transparency expectations. A thorough examination is projected to conclude within two weeks following the team’s return to Guyana.
The University is unwavering in its commitment to upholding the highest standards while adding that the gravity of the situation has deeply troubled them, motivating a proactive approach to verifying information, comprehending the nuances of the situation, and addressing it judiciously.
As this process unfolds; the University remains dedicated to transparent communication and ensuring that integrity and accountability prevail within their sports programmes, the release noted.
