Kaieteur News – Toronto Nationals, one of the 6-franchised teams at the current Global T20 taking place at Brampton Sports Park, recognized the services of former Canada captain Sunil Dhaniram.
Dhaniram received a plaque during a simple presentation handed over by owner of Toronto Nationals Manzoor Chaudhary at the venue.
Chaudhary was more than delighted to make the presentation and recognized Dhaniram’s contribution to Canada’s cricket.
Dhaniram featured in 44 one-day Internationals for Canada and 12 T20s with a number of first-class matches as well.
The Canada-based Guyanese Dhaniram began his terrific career for his adopted country in 2004 before bringing the curtains down on it in 2010.
The 54-year-old Dhaniram also donned his native country colours at the Regional level, which is an indication of his superb talent.
He is known for his batting prowess and left-arm orthodox spin. Dhaniram’s eldest brother Sudesh Dhaniram also represented Guyana at the highest level.
Sunil, still with the distinction of being the first Guyanese to skipper Canada, while he had a phenomenal time being the second-best leading runs-scorer for the Country. He proved his all-round capability by snapping up several five-wicket hauls manifesting his true passion and zeal to make an impact for Canada.
According to Chaundhary, leading Canada and playing at an International Cricket Council 50-overs World Cup tournament exemplified Dhaniram’s tremendous involvement in Canada’s cricket.
Meanwhile, Dhaniram expressed elation with the recognition citing it was indeed a great pleasure to be honoured.
He stated that he was thrilled to know that his contributions and services to the North America nation are noticed especially during the Global T20 extravaganza which is viewed around the world.
Dhaniram continued to ply his trade playing for West Indies in over-50 at various tournaments with the last being the World Cup that held in South Africa earlier this year.
He has become a household name too playing softball cricket professionally exhibiting his skills for Toronto Blizzards and Pegasus at the Ontario Masters Softball Cricket Clubs veteran tournaments.
The Global T20 which started July 20th is slated to conclude August 6th with a grand finale. However, Toronto Nationals suffered elimination already as the playoffs segment bowled off.
