Kaieteur News – Thirty-four children have completed the first year of SBM Offshore Guyana and National Coordinating Coalition’s (NCC) Enhancing Livelihoods Youth Literacy Programme which concluded in June.
The students benefitted from after-school tutoring and mentoring in literacy and numeracy to students in the communities of Sophia, Cummings Park and Cummings Lodge. Students from seven primary schools and four secondary schools benefitted from paid mentorship, tutorship and school supplies.
During the close-out ceremony, General Manager of SBM Offshore Guyana, Martin Cheong, commended the NCC for its efforts in empowering the youth of the community and emphasised the importance of education for youths.
“Through this programme, we have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of education. It has not only provided essential literacy skills but has also equipped our youth with the tools they need to build a better future for themselves and their communities. By nurturing a love for learning, fostering critical thinking, and instilling a sense of curiosity, we have empowered these young individuals to dream big and reach for the stars,” he shared.
Executive Director of the NCC, Simone Sills, extended her gratitude to SBM Offshore Guyana for its support in executing the programme, and commended the parents for their support, citing the importance of collaboration and partnerships.
“We are particularly happy that not only our students are here, but the parents were able to make it, and I am glad to see our partners because what we do is to build on partnership, at every level. The community level, the parents, the children, everyone that can come together to make this happen.”
SBM Offshore Guyana in a statement said that it continues to support projects that nurture the development of Guyanese. The programme is also in keeping with the company’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goal Four that speaks to ‘Quality Education’.
