Kaieteur News – Regma Primary School’s Selah Erskine copped the top position for Region 10 at this year’s National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) Examinations securing a place at Queen’s College.
Erskine, who has always been an outstanding student, scored 504.8 marks. Her topping the Region came as no surprise to her teachers, family and friends. Importantly, the young lady secured a place in the country’s top one percent at the examinations.
She attributed her success to hard work and support from her parents.
“I didn’t expect it but I felt pretty proud of myself, I studied regularly and put in the hard work,” the elated girl said.
Erskine told Kaieteur News that her mother supported her tremendously. The proud mom told this publication that the child has always been a diligent worker. Erskine’s mom said her daughter was never complacent and worked really hard to become successful at the exams.
“It wasn’t work, work all the time, I ensured I put in the work with her during the weekends,” she said.
Meanwhile, the top student’s teacher Ms. Lotoya Mcphoy, said she is pleased with Erksine’s results as she always remained consistent and focused.
Preparing students for NGSA was not an easy task but she is happy she was rewarded at the end. “It’s a lot of hard work, truthfully, it takes a lot out of you, especially mentally but when you have to push yourself to get the job completed, in the end the rewards are great,” McPhoy told Kaieteur News.
Copping second place in the Region Deleanna Herculese who also secured a place at Queen’s College with 504 marks. Herculese, like Erskine, said being consistent with studies was instrumental in her success.
The One Mile Primary School student was overly elated when the results were announced.
“We had to study a lot, we studied hard for the mock exams and then we continued for the finals, we did not stop,” the future President said.
She expressed appreciation to her teacher, parents and other family members for supporting her during the preparation period.
Her equally excited and proud mother said the process for her daughter was challenging but she supported her tremendously. The woman said the child spent over 12 hours at school and extra lessons, then had to complete homework and studying until after midnight every night.
“I feel very proud, I knew she would have done well, I feel very excited,” Herculese’s mom told Kaieteur News.
The other top performers for Region 10 are Ateisha Frank, Gerimiyah Petal Burgess, Shanique Storm, Amora Chesney, Keziah Ellis, Zylinna Jacobis, Avianne Basdeo and Deyse Dos Santos.
