The Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) One Guyana Open Singles Tennis championship is well underway, with exciting day seven action at the National Racquet Centre on Woolford Avenue. Thursday witnessed four thrilling Men’s Open Singles matches, where Leland Leacock, Sandeep Chand, Gerald Scotland, and Phillip Squires emerged victorious in their respective encounters.
In the Round of 32, Leyland Leacock showed his dominance as he defeated the formidable No. 3 seed, Benjettan Osbourne, with an impressive scoreline of 6/1 – 3/0 (default). Leacock’s skillful play and strategic shot placements left his opponent struggling to keep up. With this victory, Leacock secured his spot in the next round which makes him a strong contender for the championship title.
Sandeep Chand also exhibited his proficiency on the court, securing a well-deserved victory in the other Round of 32 match. Facing off against Harry Panday, Chand displayed finesse and precision, outclassing his opponent with a final score of 6/2 – 6/1. Chand’s remarkable shot selection and excellent control over the game contributed to his triumph, propelling him further into the tournament.
Meanwhile No. 4 seed Gerald Scotland had an intense battle with Rondae Hawker. Scotland’s power-shots and impeccable footwork proved to be too good for Hawker, as he outmaneuvered his opponent, securing a convincing victory of 6/2 – 6/0.
The fourth and final match of the day witnessed an impressive display of skill from the experienced Phillip Squires as he met with Ricky Romascindo. Squires showed excellent versatility on the court, seamlessly transitioning from powerful serves to agile net play. Ultimately, Squires emerged victorious with a final score of 6/2 – 6/2, highlighting his dominance in the match.
This tournament is a pillar of the emerging National Sports Academy; an initiative which is funded by the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, and by extension the Government of Guyana.
