Kaieteur Sports – The Athlete Association of Guyana (AAG) has rescheduled the 2023 Goodwill Development Meet to now take place on July 9th at the Police Sports Club (PSC) ground, Eve Leary. The change in venue is due to the unfavourable weather conditions, which rendered the National Track and Field Centre, Edinburgh, West Coast Demerara unprepared for the event.
Despite the challenges, the AAG remains committed to hosting the meet, albeit as a one-day competition. The event will feature divisions for Under 13, U14, U18, and U20 athletes, and is eagerly anticipated to showcase the talents of young athletes from various clubs in Guyana as well as Barbados.
Charles Nester, an official from the AAG, expressed disappointment to Kaieteur News regarding the inability to proceed with the originally planned competition due to the inclement weather. He explained that the decision to condense the event into a single day was made to accommodate the athletes who were already present, including the team from Barbados.
However, the Suriname team had to withdraw from the meet due to logistical issues. Despite the setbacks, the AAG is determined to ensure the event’s success, and Nester highlighted the significance of hosting a large contingent of athletes for the development meet.
In the meantime, a delegation of fifty-two individuals, including athletes, parents, and coaches, have arrived from Barbados to compete on Sunday. The team comprises prominent 100m, 200m, and 800m athletes, who will be under the guidance of Coach Carter, Coach Wesley Browne, and Coach Andre Johnson.
However, Coach Carter encouraged fans to attend and witness the exciting competition his team will provide in all events. He stated, “Barbados has been coming to Guyana for about twenty plus years now to partake in many programmes of this nature, but the first time with such a large contingent. We expect to do well at the year’s meet, despite of the few set back.” When asked about his top athletes, he teasingly stated that he ‘did not want to let the cat out the bag’, but Guyana could expect some fierce competition from his athletes on Sunday.
Action starts at 10:00 hours at the abovementioned venue.
