– Guyanese athletes in action today in Colombia
By Rawle Toney
Kaieteur Sports – Coach of Guyana’s track and field team at the South American U20, Johnny Gravesande, is oozing with confidence ahead of today’s start of the Championship in Bogota, Colombia.
Tianna Springer (200m, 400m), and includes Ezekiel Newton (100m, 200m), Wesley Noble (800m), Karese Lloyd (100m, 200m), Jaheel Corvette (100m, 200m), Erin Leitch (long jump), and Isiah Trim (high jump) are the athletes representing the Land of Many Waters at the Championship which will conclude on May 21.
Gravesande said he’s looking forward to see Springer in action, pointing to this year’s CARIFTA Games 400m gold medallist as a medal hopeful.
“I expect the team to do well because a lot of them came from the CARIFTA Games and they were medallists, so I expect them to medal at the South American U20. The team seems balance, everyone is healthy, so we’re going out there to give our best and make Guyana proud,” Gravesande said.
Springer will enter the South American U20 Championship with high expectation following her sensational 54.32s personal best performance in The Bahamas over the Easter weekend.
Lloyd will also be in the spotlight especially after the diminutive 18-year-old sprinter recently picked up a full scholarship to attend one of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division One Big East Conference powerhouse, St John’s University.
Newton is said to be one of the fastest junior sprinters in Guyana but he came up empty-handed at the CARIFTA Games.
However, Newtown would’ve found some amount of success competing with his peers in South America, since he had finished second at the South American U-18 Championships 200m, clocking 21.45s.
The US-based Nobel will want to make amends for coming up short at the CARIFTA Games in the Boys U20 400m where his time of 47.59s, even though a personal best, was only good enough for fifth place.
