Director of Sports Steve Ninvalle has confirmed that a record 1432 registrants, with 102 coming from Berbice and 120 from Linden with the remainder from Region 4, has tripled the number that attended the Easter camp, for this year’s Teach Them Young Swimming programme.
The event gets underway tomorrow at the National Aquatic Centre at Lilliendaal on the East Coast from 10:00am with the opening ceremony. It was originally set to open at the Colgrain Pool in Georgetown but due to the volume of entrants the opening has been shifted to the East Coast facility.
The programme will be held at four locations. It is set for July 18th to August 12th at the Colgrain Pool in Georgetown, National Aquatic Centre on the East Coast, Albion Estate Pool in Berbice and Watooka Pool in Linden.
In Linden it will run from July 19th to August 10th and in Berbice from July 19th to August 5th.
Last week, the Director of Sports had noted that, “The honourable Minister Charles Ramson has insisted that there will be no fees attached for registrants…. We had an Easter programme and this is the second time we will be waiving all fees associated with that…” This seemed to be a plus as the numbers in entrants suggests.
The programme caters for the age group between 9 to 18 years and sessions will be from 9:00am to 12:00noon daily following its commencement tomorrow and Tuesday in the respective areas.
The opening programme tomorrow will see Remarks from Mr. Dwayne Scott, President of the Swimming Association, Ms. Cristy Campbell, Commissioner N.S.C., Mr. Steve Ninvalle, Director of Sport and the Feature Address is expected to come from the Honorable Charles Ramson, Minister of Culture Youth and Sports.
The closing ceremony of this programme is set for August 12th again at the National Aquatic Centre at Lilliendaal on the East Coast from 9:00am.
