Dear Editor,

I have read with intrigue the recent interaction between Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo and workers of the Uitvlugt Estate. As usual, the VP comes across like a knight in shining armour as he seeks to placate the situation which beset the estate.
From what I read, the VP actively encouraged workers of the estate to take up training opportunities to be transitioned to other areas. From what I read, the VP committed himself to linking the workers with job opportunities. Additionally, the VP encouraged workers to set up businesses to become more self-reliant. On the surface, what the VP is advocating sounds very promising and sincere. Working in the estate, particularly in the fields, takes a heavy physical toll. Certainly, anyone would want to have an easier job while earning more. It’s almost like heaven on earth.
I have however learnt that what is too good to be true is ultimately is not. By encouraging, prodding, and, in some instances, pulling the workers out of the estate I must wonder aloud whether it is not a poorly disguised plan to shutter Uitvlugt Estate. Undoubtedly, all the seeds have been planted and will be nurtured to the cry that the estate is without labour and cannot continue to operate. The question that must be asked who or whom are lined up to take over the estate and the large areas of land. Will it be the usual suspects or is a new plantation owner in the making?
It causes me to ponder whether the breakage of the factory had a hidden intent. Did it serve to bring about the knight riding in to save day? If it is that there are plans to close the estate, then why not say so and be frank. I have heard that this is not the first time in this century the estate was earmarked for closure.
Clearly, it appears someone’s slip is showing.
