(Kaieteur News) – The Government of Guyana (GoG) on Friday announced the arrival of the fifth Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessel (FPSO) to the country, as installation activities commence ahead of first oil in the fourth quarter of this year.
In a statement to the media, the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) said the fifth FPSO, Errea Wittu, which is the largest vessel in the country’s current fleet, was constructed by a Japanese firm, MODEC. Guyana has four other FPSOs that are already producing oil in the Stabroek Block.
Government said the fifth vessel is expected to commence production activities in the fourth, increasing the country’s daily capacity to well over one million barrels per day (bpd). It was designed to process approximately 250,000 bpd with the capacity for gas treatment (540 million cubic feet per day), water injection (350,000 barrels per day), and handling produced water (300,000 barrels per day).
According to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) submitted by Exxon, the fifth project will develop the resources at the Uaru, Mako and Snoek fields – three separate oil discoveries announced by the company.
The vessel will be deployed approximately 200 kilometers offshore Guyana, at a water depth of 1,690 meters and it will be able to store around two million barrels of crude oil.
Currently, the country is producing about 900,000 bpd according to the GoG. It added that the US$12.7 billion project targets more than 800 million barrels of recoverable oil in the Uaru development.
Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat described the arrival of the FPSO as an important chapter in Guyana’s oil and gas development story.
He said, “With first oil expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, production is poised to cross the one-million-barrel-per-day mark. This is a major development for our country and one that brings with it greater responsibility to ensure Guyanese continue to benefit from the sector.”
Although the recent news of Exxon recovering its US$55 billion investment in Guyana was addressed by government close to three weeks later, he assured that as production increases, government remains committed to transparency in the management of the country’s petroleum revenues and to ensuring Guyanese benefit from the opportunities created by the industry.
Bharrat explained, “The government will continue to disclose petroleum revenue receipts through the National Assembly, ensuring the people of Guyana are kept informed about the revenues earned from their resources.”
Additionally, he committed to pushing for greater local content opportunities to benefit more Guyanese workers and businesses as the industry expands.
Meanwhile, in a brief statement, ExxonMobil, the operator of the block said, “Our fifth FPSO has arrived in Guyana, marking an important milestone for continued development of our offshore operations.”
The vessel Errea Wittu stems from Indigenous heritage and means “Abundance” in the Warrau language, celebrating “the promise of opportunity and growth” according to Exxon.
The company said, “We are proud to see Guyanese companies and professionals contributing to milestones like this as the industry continues to grow. As we celebrate the vessel’s safe arrival, our teams are now focused on the next phase of work to prepare the Errea Wittu for start-up.”
Guyana’s revenue flow from the sector is likely to grow significantly as the production at the vessel comes on-stream. President Irfaan Ali this week explained that Guyana’s profit from the sector has jumped from 12.5% to 39.8% as ExxonMobil has recovered its investments in Guyana.
The Stabroek Block is operated by ExxonMobil Guyana Limited, which holds a 45 per cent interest. Also, part of the offshore concession is Chevron, with a 30 per cent stake and CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited, with 25 per cent.
To date, ExxonMobil has made 46 discoveries in the 6.6 million acres block. The company has received regulatory approvals to develop seven projects which have already been paid for by Guyana.
The sixth development, Whiptail was sanctioned in April 2024 while the seventh project, Hammerhead was approved in September 2025.
The US$12.7 billion Whiptail project is anticipated to add 250 kbd by the end of 2027. Additionally, Hammerhead, the company’s US$6.8B development is expected to come online by 2029, producing 150,000 bpd.
In the meantime, ExxonMobil has submitted plans to the GoG to develop two additional projects in Stabroek.
