Performing gaps changing
Dear Editor,
I wish to commend the Ministry of Education and by extension the PPP/C administration for the significant strides made in terms of enhancing the quality of education delivery across the ten regions of Guyana. Schools which in the past were considered low-performing schools are now among the best in terms of student performances at both the primary and secondary levels. The performance gap, not only between urban and rural schools, but also between public and private schools are closing in.
This was quite unlike what it was under the previous administration when only a handful of urban schools were in the spotlight in terms of high achievers. Today schools all across Guyana such as Anna Regina Multilateral School, Tagore Memorial High School and several others have gained the national spotlight. This is indeed a significant achievement in terms of access to quality education throughout the country.
Much of these developments are attributable to increased funding to the education sector and greater emphasis on teacher education, curriculum review, increased supply of teaching/learning material in the classroom and a motivated and committed cadre of teachers. There was a time when the education sector was underperforming due mainly to systemic deficiencies and underfunding of the sector. All of that has now changed and our students are now doing well in almost every subject area including English and Mathematics.
