Taxi driver allegedly fakes own kidnapping to pay off ‘ganja debt’

Kaieteur News – Ranks are currently pursuing a taxi driver who is believed to be faking his own kidnapping to pay off a $1 million ganja debt.
According to police, the taxi driver was reportedly busted by Region Five ranks on April 22, last with marijuana in his car. There was also a passenger identified as ‘Buck Boy” with him in the car at the time. Ranks had managed to apprehend the passenger but the taxi driver had sprinted away from the lawmen, leaving his car behind.
However, on Wednesday, an alleged kidnapping report made by his fiancée, a 21-year-old woman of Essex, New Amsterdam Berbice, Region Six, aroused the suspicions of police ranks.
The woman in her report to police claimed that the man had left their home on May 5, last around 19:50hrs – some 13 days after he fled from police, abandoning his car in the process.
According to the woman, she had called him at 21:45hrs and he allegedly told her that he was at Weldaad, West Coast Berbice because he had to make a pick-up at Bath Settlement.
According to her, that was the last thing she heard from him until her land line phone rang around 01:30hrs on Friday.
The woman claimed that a man’s voice on the other end of the line told her that her fiancé, the taxi driver, had his ‘stuff’ (ganja) in his car and that he wants $1 million for it. The person told her that if she failed to come up with the money, then she will find his (the taxi driver) body on the side of the road.
The woman said that she told the caller that she did not have the money and wanted to speak with her fiancé. At that point, she revealed, the call ended.
She told police that she checked her cell phone on Saturday around 10:00hrs and was greeted with photographs sent to her with her fiancé’s phone, via WhatsApp, of him on a bed with his hands and feet bound with a yellow rope. The photos were accompanied with text messages demanding $500,000 and warning her not to make contact with the police or the outcome will be “worse”.
But ranks have noted some flaws in the woman’s story. They were also able to ascertain that on the day the taxi driver abandoned his car, he was transporting drugs for an individual.
That individual, according to reports, has since demanded that the taxi driver pay him back for the drugs and police believe that the suspect made-up the kidnapping story to get the cash in order to settle the debt.
In the meantime, ‘Buck Boy’ remains in custody and police are grilling him for more information to crack the case and possibly arrest the taxi driver.
Investigations are ongoing.
