Dear Editor,
The single use plastic bag problem in Guyana can easily be solved. The U.S has solved the problem of the single use plastic bags by banning these bags and bringing in a sturdier plastic bag which the consumer has to buy for 5 US cents (approximately $5 Guyana dollars) each. You can either reuse the sturdier bags or purchase another set on your next shopping. Problem solved as no one wants to buy bags just to dump them in the garbage.
Guyanese need to take some pride in their country and stop littering everywhere in the streets. Anyone caught littering should be made to pay a fine of $5,000 to the City Council and given a receipt with a stern warning that the next time caught littering the fine will be $10,000. Only then will the litterbugs learn to respect their country and keep it clean. Our leaders need to take a firm stand – they will never be able to please everyone.
Yours truly,
Gloria Holder
