Kaieteur News – The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) yesterday during a press conference at their Headquarters in Lilliendaal, announced that they will be funding former Caribbean under-21 women’s champion Chelsea Edghill with almost $2.5 million so she will have the opportunity to go into high level training ahead of her Tokyo Olympics appearance this July-August.
During the media brief, GOA head K.A. Juman Yassin, who made the announcement, also noted that, “The Guyana Olympic Association is very happy to be able to do a bit more for Chelsea. We were able to support the table tennis team in their quest to qualify in Argentina and now we are happy to be able to support Chelsea so that she could have as much training as possible, so that when she competes, she would be at a higher level.”
For the next two months, Edghill, who is set to depart Guyana shortly, will be at the High-Performance Training Centre of Table Tennis (CAR) and Sport Clube de Mirandela, in Portugal, undergoing intense sessions in the build-up to the quadrennial showpiece.
Head of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), Godfrey Munroe, speaking to the media yesterday morning, highlighted that his association is looking to give Edghill the best preparation possible, in a safe environment.
He further revealed that, “In this regard, the Committee decided along with the President that we would support Chelsea payment for the training at the high yield centers. We paid for physiotherapy and recovery sessions, the high-performance training, her physical training, her therapy and recovery, which would include aqua, gymnastic, postural gymnastic, nutritional supplements, the airfare from Guyana to Portugal and then back to Tokyo and concluding back to Portugal or Guyana.”
Edghill, who became the first athlete to be sponsored by the Guyana Lottery Company, expressed her gratitude to those involved, the 23-year-old highlighted that it is a relief, not having to worry about the finances.
“Thank you to everyone at the GOA, the GTTA, Idi (Lewis, who is her coach) and all those who have been supporting throughout the years. Moving forward, I think it’s great the GOA has my back 100% in preparing for the games,” Edghill shared.
