LGC Treasurer Maxim Mangra (left) accepts the cheque from William Walker of Oasis Café in the presence of Patangaliee Persaud (right) and Paton George.
Kaieteur News – Golfers will test their skills when the Oasis Café/Akamai Trading tournament tees off using a new format at the Lusignan Golf Club. The format for the tournament will be match-play where two teams will be competing against each other while there will also be individuals competing on a points system.
Match play is a form of play where a player (or players) plays directly against an opponent (or opponents) in a head-to-head match. You win a hole by completing it in the fewest number of strokes, and you win a match when you are winning by more holes than remain to be played.
Speaking at the launching ceremony on Wednesday at Oasis Café, Vice President of the LGC Paton George said the winning team and individuals will be given prizes. Each team will comprise of about 20-25 members selected by the Captains.
“There will be a $30,000 prize for the winning team which will be available through the bar and restaurant located in the clubhouse,” he added. George expressed gratitude to the sponsors and urged the players to turn out in the covid friendly environment.
Manager of Oasis Café and passionate golfer, William Walker thanked the club for accommodating such format. Walker said that match-play format is a very pure form of golf which he enjoys like his opposite team captain, Brian Hackett.
“I also encourage members of the public to come out and get involved in golf more, it’s a very interesting game and something we want more people to be a part of,” he stated.
President of LGC, Patangaliee ‘Pur’ Persaud thanked the media, Walker and Brian Hackett of Akamai Trading for their support. He said that it’s going to be an exciting tournament since some of the top local golfers will be competing. “It’s going to stand up with the best in the country and I estimate we will have about 50 players competing.”
Persaud noted that this format would normally be played on a friendly basis but the Club decided to take it one step forward and have the players competing. He is calling on the fans to observe the covid protocols. The 18-hole tournament will begin from 12:00hrs. (Zaheer Mohamed)
