– taxi driver accused of holding onto victim, smashing him into parked cars
Kaieteur News – New details have emerged regarding the death of a 29-year-old Triumph, East Coast Demerara man who was killed in a row over $700 on Durban Street, Lodge, in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
On Monday, the police in a statement had said that the victim, David Barclay, had approached the suspect, who was believed to be a mechanic, to fix his vehicle. The vehicle had encountered problems on Durban Street. The police stated that “the victim approached the suspect in a bid to have a tyre on his vehicle repaired, and in the process of making a payment; an argument ensued over the said payment, during which the suspect took a knife and slashed a tyre in the victim’s car.”
They further stated that the suspect, who is in their custody, told them that he jumped into a vehicle and while in the process of driving off, Barclay jumped onto the right side door and held onto him, causing him to lose control. He crashed into several vehicles that were parked.
However, the victim’s best friend claimed Monday that this was far from the truth.
She stated that Barclay took her, his son and ‘baby mother’ to the seawalls on Saturday night. He also gave two of her relatives a ride home.
Following that, Barclay dropped her home and was going to his mother’s house where his child was staying. “On the way there they encountered a flat tyre, where my best friend make a call to his mechanic brother and cousin but got no answer, then he decided to stop a taxi,” his best friend stated.
The taxi driver took him home and he returned to Durban Street with the spare tyre, where the driver requested $4,000 for the fare and Barclay gave him $5,000. “The driver said he don’t have change so my friend gave him $3,300 change he had and the outburst over the short money began,” she disclosed.
Further, she said that Barclay then went to his car where he left his baby mother to find more change and the taxi driver took out a knife and slashed the spare tyre which led to a heated argument between the two.
The taxi driver then got into his car, according to the friend, and Barclay attempted to snatch him from the window.
However, the woman said, the driver held on to Barclay and drove into five cars that were parked.
Barclay was badly injured. Video footage seen by this newspaper showed the woman holding Barclay’s motionless body, screaming for help. An ambulance only arrived about a half-hour later.
