Kaieteur News – Former national cyclist, Hamzah Eastman on Thursday last, secured High Court bail on firearm related charges.
On November 10, Eastman made his first court appearance before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, to answer to gun and ammunition charges but was remanded to prison.
However, an application for bail was made in the High Court for Eastman. On Thursday, High Court Judge Navindra Singh, granted him bail in the sum of $150,000.
Eastman is being represented by attorney-at-law, Bernard DaSilva, and is expected to make his next court appearance before Senior Magistrate Daly, on Friday, November 27.
In the application, DaSilva highlighted that one reason for his client to be released on bail is due to the fact that his trial date would not be within a reasonable time. He also noted that another reason is due to the inhumane and unhygienic conditions of the prison, which would put his client at risk of contracting the deadly COVID-19 disease.
Eastman had denied the charges which alleged that on November 7, 2020, at Cane View Avenue, Roxanne Burnham Gardens, Georgetown, he had a .32 revolver in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm license.
And the latter charge stated that on the same date and at the same location, he had four .32 live rounds of ammunition in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
According to DaSilva, on the day in question, his client was standing with a group of friends on the road when a marked police vehicle drove past them. The vehicle then stopped and reversed.
However, upon seeing this, Eastman’s friends escaped leaving him alone behind. DaSilva is contending that the police then picked up a gun not far from where his client was standing and arrested him for possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
