The Maternity Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has seen a remarkable drop in the number of complaints being lodged there for last year.
This is according to a senior official at the city hospital.
In a recent interview with this publication the official, referencing information garnered from an internal audit of the ward, stated that for the year 2018 a total of 481 complaints were filed at the public hospital’s Complaints Department about wanting service being offered to patients hospitalised in the Maternity Unit. However, for the year 2019 a total of 268 complaints were filed and thus far, for this year, there have been none.
It is the official’s belief that the significant decline in maternity ward complaints are due to the recognition the hospital has gained both locally and internationally. As a result of this recognition, the public hospital has been receiving several donations from overseas and local charitable organisations.
“For the past three years, the Maternity Unit of the hospital has been doing a tremendous job when it comes to taking care of mothers and babies admitted to the Unit. There were times whenever you open a newspaper or go on social medial people always have something negative to say about the Unit, but things and time have changed, and so have medical personnel working here. Now at the Maternity Unit, I truly believe that the goal of all the medical personnel working there is to ensure safe deliveries and proper neonatal care,” the official shared.
Kaieteur News understands that presently there are a total of 760 beds in the Maternity Unit and currently over 600 of these are occupied with patients. In addition, a section of the Maternity Unit is under construction and after this is completed, more space will be available for patients.
Of recent, the Maternity Unit was bestowed with over 60 additional beds and four incubators from an overseas donor.
Also, with the aim of offering the best service available, the Board of Directors of the hospital recently implemented a health and family life education programme for young and first time mothers admitted to the Unit.
For the year 2019, a total of 6,200 babies were successfully delivered in the hospital’s Maternity Unit.
