Two fishermen from Belvedere Village, Corentyne, Berbice were yesterday remanded to prison for the murder of four fishermen some eight miles out from the Number 53 foreshore in Corentyne waters.
Appearing beside each other with a disdain look upon their faces, Narine Dhanraj, called “Chu-Chu-Bai”, 30, of Belvedere Village, and Suresh Sumdatt, called “Buckman”, 22, of Belvedere Squatting Area stood before Magistrate Peter Hugh at the Number 51 Magistrate Court, yesterday, to answer to the joint charge of murder.
The men who were not represented by an attorney were not required to plead to the indictable charge.
It is alleged that Sumdatt and Dhanraj, in the company of others, murdered Ajai Kissoon, Vishnu Seeram, Marvin Tamasar and Lamar Petrie during a piracy attack between Saturday October 5, and Sunday October 6, 2019 in Corentyne waters.
Prosecutor Orin Joseph told the court the file was not complete and requested another week. The men are set to return to court on November 7, next.
On Friday, investigators acted on information and arrested the two men. After an intense interrogation process, the suspects confessed on Monday that they had murdered the four fishermen to steal the fish they had caught on their trip.
They told investigators that they chopped, tied up and dumped the men overboard while they were still alive, before escaping with the fish and a boat engine.
Captain of the attacked boat (SARA-1), Vishnu Seeram, called Kevin, along with Ajai Kissoon, Lamar Petrie and Marvin Tamasar, set out on their fishing trip on October 5, 2019 from the Number 65 fishing wharf.
The trip was considered an important one for the men since they wanted to make money to repay debts owed to the owners of the fishing vessels, which they used. They were expected to return two weeks later.
The following week, a bound corpse washed up on the Abary foreshore. Two days later, police on the Corentyne visited the families of Seeram, Kissoon, Tamasar and Petrie to inform them that Seeram’s boat was found between Wellington Park and Phillipe Village on the foreshore.
Blood was reportedly spattered in the boat, and the engine was missing.
Kissoon’s wife was informed via social media that a body was found at Abary.
The victim was positively identified as Ajai Kissoon.
A few days later, another body, also bound by the hands and feet, washed up on the Abary foreshore. That victim was identified as Lamar Petrie.
A post-mortem examination conducted on the bodies by Government Pathologist Nehaul Singh had revealed that both men died from drowning and wounds to the head. The bodies of Marvin Tamasar and Vishnu Seeram are still to be located.
Meanwhile, the police have issued a wanted bulletin for O’Brian Fraser also known as ‘Shines’ of Lot 66 Eversham Village , Corentyne, and Anonth Boodrage called ‘Andy’ of Lot 19 Belvedere Village, Corentyne .
The men are wanted for questioning in connection with the Piracy/Murder committed between October 5 and October 6, last, on Lamar Petrie, Vishnu Seeram, Kawal Kissoon and Marvin Tamesar at Corentyne River.
The police are asking that anyone with information, that may lead to the location and arrest of these men, to contact the police on telephone numbers 333-3876, 333-5564, 333-2151-3, 337-2411, 335-3014, 225-3650, 226-1928, 911 or the nearest police station.
