A game of football ended tragically for 18-year-old Seon Griffith of School Street, Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara after he was chopped to his neck and right hand by another player at the game.
On Friday, Mr. Griffith underwent emergency surgery for the wound at his neck in order for him to be able to breathe independently.
According to family members, the teen was first rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital but because of the critical state that he was in, he was then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further medical attention.
In an interview with Kaieteur News the teen’s sister, Tyra Quick, said, “It’s about two weeks now since he began going to the community centre to play football with the other youths that does be there playing.”
Miss Quick said that she was not at the playfield when the incident occurred but she was told that the youths were all playing football. Seon dribbled the ball away from another player and the player became offended by this.
In his anger, the player went for a chopper some few feet away and upon his return, he chopped Seon to his neck and hand.
She added that she and her mother were at home cooking when a neighbour came with the news that her brother got chopped.
“When we went to the playfield, his blood was all over the ground but someone else had already taken him to the hospital.”
“It was a gruesome sight at the scene. My brother’s flesh was all over the ground and being his sister, it hurt me to look at his flesh on the ground like that.”
“I can’t believe is a football game that cause all that bloodshed; it has to be something more than that because they all would play ball in the afternoon. I can’t understand that because my brother dribble the ball from another person, he had to get chopped so bad.”
The teen’s mother, Nadia Patterson, explained that she is not satisfied with the way the police are investigating the matter.
“Nobody from the police force has come to the hospital to say what really going on or if to take the matter into our own hands or even if they are searching for the suspects.”
Ms. Patterson is saying that she believe that people feel that they could do as they please to anybody and then walk the road ‘scotch free’ but as a mother, she will not allow such to happen to her family. She is prepared to seek justice for her son. She is calling on the necessary authorities to handle the matter with more haste before the suspect escape the jurisdiction.
The mother said that reports were made to the Wales Police Station but she doesn’t believe the police are doing everything in their power to get to the bottom of the issue.
